The Coffee Debate: Hot versus Cold

psx_20170311_115425.jpg

Walk barefoot in deserts
Fight sharks in the sea
What I wouldn’t do for
Freshly brewed coffee

One step in the cafe
My senses go wild
It’s my candy shop and
I feel like a child

Barista smiles and says
“Welcome to our hold
Would you like a hot one
Or just something cold?”

“A Latte to-go please
Make sure that it’s strong
I’m driving cross-country
The road there is long

“A cold cup of java
Can’t cut it for me
If I have to stay up
Then hot it should be

“The weather is freezing
With chance of more rain
The warmth of this cup will
Make me whole again

“Ice cubes are a no-no
Whipped cream’s not my thing
The heat gives me pleasure
My soul starts to sing

“I’ll be off the grid for
A few days at most
Gazing the star-lit skies
Just right off the coast

“So while you are at it
Some beans would be great
With coffee by my side
Won’t care what I ate

“I know once I’m out there
I’ll start missing you
A hot cup will drive out
All my feelings blue”

With this the Latte’s done
Spruced with a cream heart
Silky smooth perfection
A true work of art

“Thank you for choosing us
May luck be with thee
When you come back, dear sir
Your coffee’s on me!”

“The pleasure was all mine
Cheers to your kind thought
With more of my ramblings
I will bore you not

“As days pass us by and
The sun beats us down
Won’t mind an Iced tea to
Pick me from the ground!”

Up, Up and Away

hdr01c

If I could ever learn to fly
I’d fly so high, I’d touch the sky
With rolling hills and meadows lush
Things tall and small just passing by

As tears of joy stream through my eye
And clouds of gloom amass, oh my!
I’d force myself to face the wind
Above the storm, I would soar high

The turbulence I’d take in stride
Won’t let the lightning strike my pride
I’d flap my wings so hard it hurts
Keep moving on, nothing to hide

No one would stop me, rain or shine
I’d own the sky and make it mine
And leave all my troubles behind
While guided by the light divine

The pull of gravity I’d fight
Break free from its oppressive might
Mind over matter, will so strong
Won’t let it stop my maiden flight

The Story Of Us

dsc_8021

Mesmerized
Traumatized
Ostracized
And chastised

Breathing air
Filled with lies
Vengeful words
In disguise

Fairytales
Broken hearts
Juxtaposed
Miles apart

All your smiles
Laced with spite
Covert looks
Pure-bred blight

Ticking clocks
Out of sync
Broken pens
Lacking ink

Symphonies
Jarring sounds
Hunting me
Packs of hounds

When will you
Break these walls
Answer me
Not their calls

Time to stop
Take a look
Is this one
For the books

Read between
Wordless lines
Shed the dark
Let it shine

Fools we are
Chasing ghosts
Leaving what
Matters most

Realize
Recognize
Empathize
Synchronize

Off You Go

I gave you wings
So you could fly

Let go of doubt
Just don’t be shy

Shake off your fears
Give them a try

At first you’ll fall
May even cry

But I’ll be there
To wipe your eye

In but a blink
Your tears shall dry

’cause night will pass
The light is nigh

With dreams in tow
You shall go high

The winds of time
Will pass you by

And lift you up
Beyond the sky

Note: One moment you’re carrying them in your arms, and the next, you’re dropping them off to school on their first day. Children grow up so fast and as much as you want to hold on to them, there’s nothing you can do to stop them from their destiny. This poem is a gift to my children Fatima and Muhammad; they are the light of my life, the twinkle in my eye, and the beat of my heart. To them, I say:

There’s nothing you cannot do or accomplish if you set your mind to it. If you ever need me, you just need to to call; I’ll be there to break your fall and support you in getting your bearing straight. All the best, my little birdies; fly high and let nothing drag you down. The world is your nest now.

The Only Star

DSC_9494

Falling down through life
With nothing to hold on to
About to crash and burn
Not a thing that I could do

As the darkness took me in
A ray of light came through
Love and hope it spread
And took me right to you

Since then it has been bright
There’s no sign of despair
Sunshine in the meadows
Rainbows everywhere

Gravity pulls me to you
I’m losing self-control
Destined to be together
Unite, be one, be whole

Life revolves around you
Nothing else is up to par
In this galaxy of mine
You are the only star

Living A Nightmare

Meltdown2copy

I cry myself to sleep at night
Wake up at two, no sign of light
There’s still so many hours to go
There’s still many demons to fight

I try real hard but nothing takes
Memories break open the gates
Gushing in with an unseen force
Bringing my nightmares in their wake

I gasp for hope to no avail
Lungs faith deprived, all senses fail
Try to hold on to something real
Helpless, blinded, darkness prevails

I sense a glimmer up above
With all my might I push and shove
Knew in my heart you’d come save me
And fill my life with endless love

I rub my eyes, the vision’s clear
You’ve gone too far, no hope is near
These demons are now destiny
With that I shed a single tear

I stare into infinity
To see what life would really be
These scars that I have on my soul
Are your one parting gift to me

I only have dark thoughts to keep
Death’s quite a ways, waters too deep
With nightmares on ‘Play. End. Repeat.’
I cry myself right back to sleep

Final Thoughts

Beauty aside, my tears won’t lie
Left on the floor waiting to die
Wonder if any would miss me
Or step on me and just walk by
